West Entrance Road

The West Entrance Road is one of five roads that provide access to the Grand Loop Road and the rest of Yellowstone. This is the route taken by those coming from the town of West Yellowstone, Montana. The West Entrance Road is typically open for vehicle travel May through October.

Mile 0 – West Entrance

Just beyond the town of West Yellowstone is the entrance sign welcoming you to Yellowstone National Park. 0.3 miles beyond the sign is the entrance station. The park entrance fee must be paid or a valid pass shown.

Mile 7.6 – Madison River Picnic Area

The road passes by the Madison River Picnic Area.

Mile 10.5 – Mount Haynes Overlook

The Mount Haynes Overlook is on the right. This point offers a good view of the 8,235 foot peak.

Mile 12.4 – Harlequin Lake Trailhead

The road passes by a small parking area for the Harlequin Lake Trail.

Mile 13.9 – Madison Campground

Mile 14.1 – Madison Junction

The road arrives at Madison Junction. A right turn joins the Grand Loop Road on the Old Faithful to Madison section. A left turn enters the Madison to Norris section.
