Kings Canyon Scenic Drive (Part 1)
The Kings Canyon Scenic Drive (CA-180) runs from the Big Stump Entrance of Kings Canyon to its end at an area appropriately known as Road’s End. We cover this road in three sections. Part 1 runs from the Big Stump Entrance to the national forest boundary. It is covered below. For the next section, from the national forest boundary to where the road reenters Kings Canyon National Park, see Kings Canyon Scenic Drive Part 2.
Mile 0 – Park Entrance
CA-180 passes by the entrance sign welcoming you to Kings Canyon National Park and takes on the name Kings Canyon Scenic Drive.
Mile 0.6 – Entrance Station
The road approaches a stop sign. To the left, the new, and in theory temporary, entrance station lies. The park entrance fee must be paid here or a valid pass shown. Since passing through this loop is mandatory, its negligible 0.1 miles is included in the mileages from this point on.
Mile 1.8 – Generals Highway
The Generals Highway heads off to the right. This road passes through Sequoia National Forest on its way to Sequoia National Park.
Mile 3.0 – Wilsonia
On the right is Wilsonia, a private community within the park. There are no visitor services on this road.
Mile 3.1 – Sunset Campground
Sunset Campground, the first of many campgrounds in the park, is on the left. For more information on all the campgrounds in the park, see Sequoia & Kings Canyon Camping.
Mile 3.3 – Grant Village area
The road approaches the Grant Grove area. The Kings Canyon Visitor Center and Grant Village Lodging are located here.
Mile 3.5 – Campgrounds & Grant Grove
Roads go to both the left and the right here. To the left is the Azalea Campground, the Columbine Picnic Area, and access to the General Grant Tree and General Grant Loop Trail. To the right is the Crystal Springs Campground.
Mile 4.6 – Sequoia National Forest
The road leaves Kings Canyon National Park and enters Sequoia National Forest.
The Kings Canyon Scenic Drive Continues On
For the next part, from the national forest boundary to where the road reenters Kings Canyon National Park, see Kings Canyon Scenic Drive Part 2.
