Animals and Plants

Mammals within the park are typical of the region, consisting mostly of rodents, bats, and other small mammals. Deer are the only large mammal known.
The park has a variety of frogs, toads, and salamanders. The NPS has prepared a checklist of park amphibians.
The park's mild climate supports a wide variety of bird species. The NPS has prepared a checklist of park birds.
The part of the park not within the city is mostly covered with forested hills and valleys. It is primarily made up of oak, hickory, and pine, with many other species as well. Wildflowers and flowering trees put on a beautiful show in the spring.
