About Great Basin Weather

Great Basin National Park's weather is heavily influenced by elevation. There is an 8,000 ft difference in elevation between Wheeler Peak and the valley floor. In late spring and early summer, days in the valley may be hot while the snow still lingers in the higher elevations. The Great Basin is a desert climate, with low humidity and sharp drops in temperature at night. In the summer, afternoon thunderstorms are common. It can snow any time of the year at high elevations. The average statistics below are taken at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center, which lies at 6,825 feet. The records are taken from the town of Baker, Nevada, which lies just outside the park at a slightly lower elevation.
