Public camping outside the park
For those campers who didn't reserve in advance or show up at 7:30 in the morning, camping outside Arches will probably be necessary. Luckily, there are a number of campgrounds on public land in the surrounding area. There are also numerous privately owned campgrounds in the town of Moab. Two areas of camping, both operated by the
Bureau of Land Management, deserve specific mention.

The first area is along Utah 128, a Scenic Byway, also known as River Road. The BLM operates 10 campgrounds on this road, which follows the course of the Colorado River. Many of the sites are on the river itself, and are as little as four miles from Arches. These areas are operated first come, first served.

The second area is along Utah 279, another Scenic Byway, also known as Potash Road. The BLM operates 3 campgrounds on this road, which also follows the course of the Colorado River. These sites are a bit further from Arches, with the closest being about eight miles away. These areas are operated first come, first served.
